Hill 60 shaping up

Wollongong City Council will be starting works in Port Kembla from Monday 9 October to upgrade the MM Beach car park and install outdoor fitness equipment in Gloucester Boulevard.

The MM Beach car park is a popular gathering hub on Gloucester Boulevarde for beach users and visitors, and is due for renewal.

A redesign has been completed with the carpark to now include fifteen parking bays and two accessible bays. The shared cycleway will be realigned around the new carpark, and additional seating, a picnic table, water bubbler, rubbish bin, and interpretative artwork on tree guards will be installed. A dog bowl and a shower will also be put in at the beach access point.

Wollongong City Lord Mayor Cr Gordon Bradbery OAM said “This area sits on a stunning piece of the Illawarra coastline and is well-loved by the Port Kembla community, especially those who enjoy cycling, going for a beach stroll or taking the dog for a walk.

“The community helped us to create the Hill 60 Master Plan, and as part of that, told us they wanted improved viewing areas, park furniture for MM Beach, interpretive signage and artwork, and improved pedestrian and vehicle access.

“The addition of accessible parking and a picnic table means that people of all abilities will soon be able to come and enjoy this scenic area’s impressive beach and island views” said Cr Bradbery.

Outdoor fitness equipment was also highlighted as a priority for the community during the Hill 60 Master Plan consultation. A fitness station will be installed just south of the Darcy Rd intersection.

“These assets are proving popular throughout the city, and free access to gym equipment provides opportunities for everyone to improve their health and fitness” said Cr Bradbery.

“For those who enjoy getting fit and active in the great outdoors, this is great news.”

Celebrate Allan Street’s new makeover!

The big reveal of the revamped Allan St precinct is just days away. The new play space is being installed at the moment, and will soon be complete. This area has been given a new look and feel through people power, with the Port Kembla community getting behind the project with support from Wollongong City Council. Over 50 people were involved in the 7 Day Makeover in August, with the installation of the new play space being the final task that marks the project complete.

Council is holding a community celebration to open the playground and say thanks to the community for all their excellent work. Come along to Allan Street on Saturday 23rd September, from 11am to 1pm. There will be a sausage sizzle, children’s activities and the chance to try out the new space.

3 days left of the 7 Day Makeover – join in!

Volunteers have been doing a fantastic job of painting bench seats and brickwork in bright colours during Allan Street’s 7 Day Makeover. They’ve also been doing some landscaping for a natural play area.

There’s more landscaping happening on Wednesday (2 August) and on Thursday morning from 8am to noon, they’ll be doing some planting. On Friday, everyone will work together to add the final finishing touches, then on Saturday morning, we celebrate!

Anyone who still wants to join in is most welcome – just pop down to the site and let them know you want to help. All ages and abilities can take part, no skills or experience required. You can join in for as little as an hour if you like!
