The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) received $44,000 through Round 2 of the Port Kembla Community Investment Fund program for the Report on Heavy Metal Contaminants from industrial activity in Port Kembla – Environmental Project.
The project is conducting a comprehensive independent literature review on heavy metal contamination caused by industrial activity at Port Kembla, is benchmarking them against the most up-to-date national and international standards, and is providing an evidence base that guides future decision making to ensure human safety.
The report will be accessible to the public through the EPA website. A summary and recommendations will also be provided to the Lead and Other Heavy Metal Contamination Working Group (comprising the EPA, NSW Health and Wollongong City Council), Wollongong City Council councillors and the Port Kembla Pollution Meeting.
This project is of significant importance for building community amenity in Port Kembla by providing confidence to residents, workers and visitors that their health is assured.
The project is scheduled for completion in late 2019.
